This Sucks- Music Recommendations
Written by Abby Wray on May 3, 2020
So. This sucks.
I don’t know about all of you but lately, when I’m not stressed or worried about the future I am very bored. Like soul-crushingly bored. This quarantine has left me with a lot of time for introspection and I have been able to go back through my Spotify, Youtube, podcasts, and all video streaming platforms to find the best of the best that has been helping me survive- so I decided to make lists and maybe these recommendations could help you too. I’m going to break these up into smaller articles because it would get overwhelming as one. This is for people who need music recommendations. All these songs and albums can be found on Spotify and I’m sure on other music streaming platforms.
DISCLAIMER- These are all songs and albums from various genres and I never promised I had good music taste.
Music for when you want to study or focus
BALLADS 1- by Joji ~ I listen to this one when I want modern chill music in the background.
Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa- by Jeremy Dutcher~ This one is an odd pick for sure but give it a chance. This opera singer and composer blends his Wolastoq First Nation roots to create music, meaning most if not all of this is in another language. If you want something different, calming, and beautiful this one’s for you.
Then I Try Some More- by Joanna Sternberg~ This was one of my favorite albums from 2019, simple piano and guitar with beautiful vocals. I can fall asleep listening to this every night.
Improvisations on an Apricot- by Aqueduct Ensemble~ This is a 30 minute jazz album, good for playing in the background if you don’t want words interfering.
Music for when you need a pick me up
Blinding Lights- by The Weekend ~ Amazing for a mood boost, high energy, catchy and positive.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World- by Tears for Fears~ This is for when you want to feel like you are in a teenage coming of age movie, you know the kind I’m talking about.
Subaru Crosstrek XV- by Hobo Johnson~ Something about this song’s vibe makes me want to move around, definitely a jamming song. Also, there is a level of humor and relatability I love in his work.
Kids- by MGMT~ Summer in a song. Good good stuff.
MOOO!- by Doja Cat~ When you are taking life too seriously and you need to laugh this is the song for you, not everyone will get it but that’s okay.
Jump Up, Super Star- by VGR, Jenny~ This is for the child in all of us, crazy positive overall, you just need to jump up when you hear it.
Break My Stride- by Matthew Wilder~ The 80s are back and better than ever. You might recognize this from Tik Tok or a lifetime of good music taste; either way, it’s a bop.
Trampoline- by Kero Kero Bonito~ Some of this bands best work, another song to jump to. It just changes your mood when you hear it.
She Don’t Use Jelly- by The Flaming Lips~ This is for when you want a song that sounds good and kind of sort of doesn’t make sense. Good vibes.
Attention- by Todrick Hall~ This song is so loud, in your face you have to dance and jam. The queen knows how to make a banger for sure.
Music when you are emotional about the situation we are in
Rage- by Rico Nasty~ If you are feeling furious there is no better song. I cannot express my love for this woman, she is an absolute treat for blessing our ears with this music. If you want to scream along, this is the song.
Cringe- by Matt Maeson~ This is a deeper pain, anger and more sadness mixed with disappointment. Great song, he is a clearly talented singer.
I Dreamed a Dream- by Anne Hathaway~ Yes this is the song from Les Miserables, it is so, so sad. Sometimes you just need an emotional cry and this is that song.
The Winner Takes It All- by ABBA~ This is a very emotion filled song for when you feel like admitting defeat but need a boost of power; you truly can’t always win.
It’s Okay To Cry- by SOPHIE~ This song is for when you need your feelings validated, it really is okay to be emotional and express your feelings especially during a pandemic.
Riptide- by Vance Joy~ A little nostalgia for the teenagers, this song brings back memories. Not especially happy, not too sad.
A Little Bit Longer- by Jonas Brothers~ A super sad song especially considering the artist, another throwback but lovely song. (Nick Jonas is the most talented brother, there I said it)
SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK- by Joji~ If you’re on a late night drive to de-stress, this is the song to blast with the bass extra loud.
If the World Was Ending- by JP Saxe, Julia Michaels~ These singers are SO talented and it is clear when listening to this song. I get emotional listening to it just a little every time.
Hard Times- by Paramore~ A very upbeat and positive sounding song about darker subjects, this song puts a unique spin on a difficult period of time.
Grouch- by Green Day~ This is one of the angriest songs I know, like literal teen angst in a song but so, so good all the same. If you want a taste of 90s Green Day having the time of their lives this is the song.
