KWU Self Defense Class: Learn to Protect Yourself
Written by Magen Dow on October 10, 2025
On this past Friday, October 3rd, Kansas Wesleyan University hosted a self-defense class. This class is taught by Sergeant Carlos O’Donald and Detective George Brazionis. Sergeant O’Donald has been with the Salina Police Department for 21 years, and Detective Brazionis has been with the police department for 19 years. In total, both instructors were highly qualified and knowledgeable about their subject matter.
Each tactic was explained very well and was taught with a clear purpose.
I got the privilege to attend the class myself, and I can say I am happy I did. This is my second year in a row attending this class taught
by Sergeant O’Donald and Detective Brazionis. They were great instructors who were hands-on and quite funny, which made the class even more enjoyable. They gave scenarios for each defensive tactic they taught, which was really helpful. Overall, we got to learn a lot of defensive tactics, from kicking, punching, elbowing, grappling, and more. Each tactic was explained very well and was taught with a clear purpose.
I interviewed both Detective Brazionis and Sergeant O’Donald, and here is what they said below.
When asked what the self-defense class they teach entails and what happens during it, Sergeant O’Donald said,
“What we’re hoping with this defensive tactics class, or self-defense class… is to educate both male and female students how to defend themselves and how to get away from an altercation. It’s not to teach you how to fight, it’s to teach you to get away.”
“Some of the techniques that we teach here are techniques that we use on the street…”
Detective George Brazionis said when he was asked what one thing he wants us to take away from the class they teaches,
“Some of the techniques that we teach here are techniques that we use on the street… I really would like to see that kind of spark of interest in women’s self-defense and defensive tactics for everyone… Everyone who participated in the class can see that, hey, there’s things I can do to try and help me, even if I think I’m in the worst case scenario, to try to eliminate panic and institute an idea of training.”
If you or your loved ones are thinking about taking a self-defense class, I highly recommend that you do. You can learn very useful defensive skills that can help get you out of any scary situation you may find yourself in.
