KWU Winter and Fall Sports Update

Written by on February 3, 2026

KW winter sports are in full swing, and spring sports are just around the corner. Here at KWU Student Media, we’re going to give an update on how the winter sports are going and expectations for the upcoming spring sports. KW is the three-time defending Commissioner’s Cup champions and will look to get another one this year.

Men’s Basketball

Men’s basketball is right in the thick of conference play and looking to grab a spot in the KCAC tournament. They have accrued a 9-13 record overall and 7-9 in conference so far. They have 6 conference games remaining as they look to finish the season strong. First-year head coach Jordan Murdock has seen some improvement over the course of the year. The Yotes are led by transfer Caiden Punt, who is averaging almost 17 points per game this year. Freshman guard Brandon Avedon has also been a huge contributor, adding 12 points per game in his rookie season.

Woman’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team has played extremely similarly to the men’s team so far. They have a 10-12 record so far and also have a 7-9 record in the conference. With 6 games remaining, they are also looking to make a run and make some noise in the KCAC conference. Harper Taylor is leading the lady Yotes in her first year. She is in her second stint after serving as an assistant coach. The Yotes have been led by junior guard Odessa Ozuna, who is averaging 13 points as the leading guard.  Izzy McCool and Anna Jueneman who are both averaging double-digit points, have been helping out Ozuna on the offensive side.

Baseball

The Coyote baseball season has been delayed a couple of times because of weather. They were supposed to play in New Mexico last weekend and at home this past weekend, but both were canceled because of weather. Their opening day will now be Tuesday, February 3, hosting Central Christian. They will then host a 4-team series this weekend at Dean Evans Stadium. The Coyote baseball team has enjoyed a bunch of recent success and has high expectations once again. They have reached postseason play the last three seasons and look to keep that streak going. They are in a good position and have several upper-class all-conference players returning.

Softball

KW softball is scheduled to start February 13 when they travel to Oklahoma. The Coyotes are led by 4th-year head coach Ryan Cooper, looking to take the next step with the softball team. They have hovered around .500 in his time here, but there seems to be a lot of excitement this year.

Flag Football

Flag football has been one of the most dominant sports at KW the past several years, and 2026 looks to be no different. They are under the new direction of Coach Chris Snyder, who moved over from the football team. The Yotes are excited and expected to be at the top of the standings once again.
