Day Trips Outside Salina

Written by on September 16, 2024

As the fourth week of classes comes to a start, some students may have done all there is to do in Salina. However, there is no need to be scared, as there are many day trips students can take that are less than a 3 hour car ride away from Salina!

Coronado Heights Park

The first trip is just a short 15 minute drive south, called Coronado Heights Park. According to Salina Central Senior Keaton Myers, this area is a remnant of Famous Spanish conquistador Francisco Coronado. Coronado allegedly stopped at this spot on his way to find the 7 cities of gold.  However, some think that this legend isn’t true, but student Jacob Brown stated that recently there was a Spanish chest plate found down stream of the castle.

Worlds Largest Czech Egg

Another place to visit is in Wilson, Kansas that is just a 50 minute drive west. Wilson has a rich history of Czech immigrants so it’s no surprise that this town holds the honor of having the Worlds Largest Czech Egg. According to the City of Wilson’s chamber of commerce, the egg is 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide and was  designed by Christine Slechta. It was unveiled in July of 2016 after many years of development.

The Garden of Eden

The final day trip is in the small town of Lucas, Kansas. This is by far the farthest trip on the list as it is an hour North West of Salina. This town has the pleasure of having the wacky sight seeing attraction called The Garden of Eden. This attraction was built over many years in the early 20th century by Civil War veteran S.P. Dinsmoor. The house is an art installation, where every statue is entirely made out of concrete. What makes it even more interesting is that you can actually go see the mummified remains of Dinsmoor in the tomb that is on the house’s property.

While there are many other places to visit, like the Worlds largest ball of Twine, these 3 destinations are the closest in Salina for wacky places to visit. If you want more places to visit that are in Salina, check out the article about Sky Trampoline Park!
