Calm washes over the Kansas Wesleyan University Memorial Library on Wednesday afternoon. From 3:00 to 5:00, students trade their textbooks for cuddles at the popular “Study with Schuyler” event. This unique program gives students a valuable opportunity to pet the campus dog, Schuyler, while they tackle homework and prepare for exams. The event has quickly become a massive hit, providing much-needed comfort during the busiest academic weeks.

The Student Development office designed the event to directly address high stress levels on campus. Students simply arrive, settle down with their study materials, and wait for Schuyler to make her rounds. Initially, some students focus completely on their laptops, but as Schuyler approaches, they quickly pause their work to offer a quick scratch behind the ears. This simple interaction immediately lowers tension and anxiety. Furthermore, the presence of a calm, friendly dog creates a supportive and relaxed atmosphere.

A Perfect Break from the Grind

The library provides a quiet place for focused work; however, it can also become a source of pressure. Schuyler breaks that tension. She walks through the study spaces, happily accepting pets from students. Meanwhile, students share quick smiles and continue working on assignments.

Consequently, the event is not just about petting a dog; it’s about providing a mental reset button. Students who take a short break often return to their work with better focus and renewed energy. As mid-terms are approaching, it is important to take mental breaks and hit reset.

Smart Strategies for College Success

Since “Study with Schuyler” is all about helping students succeed, we offer these essential tips. These strategies can help you maximize your study time after you get your dose of dog therapy.

  1. Instead of just reading notes, students should test themselves with flashcards or practice questions. This method actively pulls information out of your brain and strengthens memory.
  2. Students break their work into 25-minute bursts. They follow these bursts with a short, 5-minute break. Finally, after four cycles, they take a longer 15-30 minute rest. This system keeps focus high.
  3. You explain the material out loud to a friend or even to the campus dog, Schuyler. If you can teach it, you truly understand it.
  4. Move your study spot frequently. Research shows that studying in different places helps your brain form better connections to the material.

The Power of a Pause

In addition to using smart study habits, taking short, intentional breaks is key to avoiding burnout. Above all, the “Study with Schuyler” event proves that sometimes the best way to study smarter is to step away for a moment. Students leave the library feeling calmer, happier, and better equipped to tackle their academic responsibilities. Therefore, Student Development plans to continue hosting this popular and impactful event throughout the semester. The campus dog certainly plays a vital role in the success of the entire student body.
