Get to Know Sydney Mitchell

Life Growing Up and Inspiration 

Growing up in the small town of Alma, Nebraska, born April 22nd, 2004, Sydney was a bright and up-and-coming academic with a unique introverted side who found a huge passion for reading, where she was always to be found reading in her nook she had growing up. Outside of her academics, Sydney always had a big passion for music and found herself enjoying show choir and jazz choir in high school, which she described as “one of the few places I felt like I belonged.”

Her biggest supporters growing up were her mother and brother, who were always by her side through the biggest challenges that life could bring. As she gets older, Sydney tells reporters that her biggest inspiration is “My mother. She has been my hero since I was young. She always reminded me to rise above and taught me how to be fiercely independent,” which has helped shape her into the independent leader she is today. 

Life at KWU and Future Plans 

In 2022, Sydney found herself signing at Kansas Wesleyan University, after winning the Barbra Marshall scholarship competition, and pursued a degree in English, which she is completing later this year. With her time at Kansas Wesleyan, she found herself being a leader in the Kansas Chapter of the NAACP and the leader of the Multicultural Student Union on campus. She plans to take her degree and apply to law school, where she can further her education. Sydney also found herself in multiple speaking events as well on campus, where she spoke about the importance of her advocacy for NAACP at the 7x7x7 event held on campus. When she not at school she is a hard working full time employee at Tucson’s while she is completes her degree which shows her endless dedication for her education. 

 Sydney says after she leaves Kansas Wesleyan and plans for future that “I see myself in a space of activism, whether that be in a courtroom as a lawyer or in the classroom as some kind of educator. Either way, activism is my future.”  With what she has accomplished and what she has show she can do its clear to see how much good Sydney plans to put out in the world when she enters the workforce. 

Fun Facts and Personal Favorites 

Some interesting personal favorites about Sydney is that she is a huge J Cole fan and listens to his music more than she would probably like to admit. She is also a big dog person and would even say any dog is her favorite animal even if she could choose any animal in the entire world. When asked if she can eat anything in the world every single day she said “that catfish and mac and cheese” would do the trick because that’s her absolute favorite meal.
