Meet the Faculty- Yuchen Boswell

From Corporate to Classroom-
Yuchen Boswell is one of Kansas Wesleyan University’s most recent additions to the communications department, where her primary role is teaching innovative communication classes. Boswell is currently educating through courses such as family communication, media writing, and public relations. Before she joined KWU, she taught at Barton Community College for five years and at Fort Hays State University for three years. After this, she took her leadership skills to the corporate world as a public relations manager and marketing specialist. She explains how both her teaching and professional practices allow her ” to bring real-world communication experiences and cases into the

classroom while also grounding my teaching in academic knowledge”. After leaving the corporate world Yuchen explains how she decided to go back to teaching as she remembers why she first fell in love with communication in the first place as a freshman in college when she realized “that communication is both intellectually engaging and deeply practical and that simply fascinated her”. She then goes on to say the teaching side of that love comes from her love of building connections with students that she discovered in graduate school. She would describe this as her turning point in her professional journey and how if she wasn’t teaching she would soon release how much she misses it and reel her back in. This is what ultimately led her to deciding if she wanted to be a member of Kansas Wesleyan team.
Why KWU and First Day Experience-
Boswell shares that her deciding factor in wanting to educate at Kansas Wesleyan University in comparison to other university was because “The students I met were engaged and thoughtful in class, and every conversation I had with faculty and staff was welcoming and genuine”. This made her “immediately feel like KWU was good fit. It was a supportive and positive environment where I could see myself thriving” with the positive energy that Yuchen she decided to take the role and be a yote. She says following this her “first day was busy but filled with excitement. The campus had such an energetic atmosphere, and it was refreshing to see students so full of life.” but what ended up standing out for her the most “was watching how nervous yet excited many of the new students were, especially the freshmen, as they began their journey”. Which she is blessed to be able to be apart of that journey when Boswell is,
Outside of Classroom-
She enjoys spending time with her family and flipping furniture which she explains “is a fun, hands-on way to repurpose and reimagine pieces and that brings me great joy.” As Boswell and her family get things sorted out in salina she has “really enjoyed settling into Salina. It’s big enough to offer plenty of dining and entertainment options, but small enough to foster close connections with people and the community”. As Yuchen proceeds to adjust to her position she encourages students to stop by and introduce themselves as she enjoys interacting with students in whatever educational assistance or guidance they may need. One piece of advice that helps guides her that she would like to leave with students is ““In a world where you can be anything, be yourself.” – Albert Einstein
