Kansas Wesleyan hosted Evangel University and Haskell Indian Nations University in a tri-match on September 27, turning in two very different performances. It was a hard-fought loss to Evangel followed by a dominant sweep over Haskell.
Evangel 3, KWU 1 (25–16, 21–25, 25–22, 25–23)
The Coyotes opened the day against a strong Evangel squad that entered the weekend on a hot streak. After dropping the first set, KWU responded with one of its most balanced frames of the season. They stormed to a 25–21 win in the second set behind a 6–1 run and sharp offensive rhythm.
The next two sets were tight throughout, with both teams trading long rallies and defensive digs. Evangel ultimately pulled away late in each set, using a decisive blocking advantage (17–10) and 56 total kills to edge out the Coyotes.
Despite the setback, KWU showed flashes of high-level play—particularly in serve receive and transition offense. The Yotes pushed the Valor to the brink in both the third and fourth sets.
KWU 3, Haskell 0 (25–19, 25–11, 25–16)
The Coyotes quickly regrouped for their second match of the day, cruising to a straight-sets win over Haskell Indian Nations. Kansas Wesleyan controlled the tempo from start to finish, building early leads in each set and never allowing Haskell to gain momentum.
KWU’s defense set the tone, holding Haskell to limited attacking opportunities. The offense also clicked efficiently on the outside and in the middle. The team’s energy and execution marked a strong response after the morning’s loss—a promising sign of resilience as conference play intensifies.
Tuesday Night: Doane 3, KWU 1 (25–16, 15–25, 25–23, 25–22)
On Tuesday, the Coyotes were back in action against Doane University. After a slow start in the opening set, KWU surged ahead in the second frame, jumping out to a 10–2 lead and finishing the set 25–15 behind crisp passing and aggressive serving.
Sets three and four mirrored the tight competition from the Evangel match, with the Coyotes battling through extended rallies and multiple ties. However, small errors in the closing points proved costly, as Doane managed to edge out both sets by narrow margins.
Head Coach Jessica Biegert praised his team’s fight and composure, noting that “we’re right there in these matches—it’s about finishing and maintaining our focus point to point.”
Building Forward
Over the three-match stretch, Kansas Wesleyan showcased several encouraging trends:
- Resilience and response. Each time the Coyotes faced adversity, they regrouped and played sharper volleyball in the next set.
- Offensive versatility. KWU spread its attack effectively, showing improvement in middle play and back-row defense.
- Competitive consistency. The Coyotes kept pressure on two strong programs—Evangel and Doane—both of whom entered with winning records.
Areas of growth remain, especially in closing out tight sets and matching opponents’ blocking presence at the net. But with continued progress, the Coyotes are poised to turn these close losses into conference wins.
Kansas Wesleyan returns to KCAC play later this week, looking to carry the lessons from their home stand into a crucial stretch of the season.
