SGA Responsibilities 2026

Meet SGA

The Student Government Association (SGA) is an organized group that allows student advocacy through self-determination, self-reliance, and independence for civic leadership. According to the KWU website, SGA allows interested students to serve as Senators for the school’s governing body and have an effect on things like the residence halls, athletic department, and even APS/MBA programs.

The SGA also offers activity programming on campus, which essentially allows students to coordinate and lead all on-campus activities and clubs offered by the Student Government Association. The SGA has its own constitution that all students must respect and follow if they want to keep their respective positions. For example, the executive branch will consist of four positions, including a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The current students in those seats are Zachary Daley as President, Madelene McVey as Vice President, Ryan Warren as Treasurer, and Ava Siebert as Secretary.

According to the SGA constitution, the responsibilities of the President are the most challenging as they have to approve all legislation passed by the senate, fulfill through either personal attendance or appointment all student representative positions, convene the senate in case of emergency, and make an executive order that is not inconsistent with the principles and purposes of the constitution.

Why should you join?

Madelene McVey

We caught up with Vice President Madelene to ask her why she decided to get involved in SGA and how it has helped her in the long run.

“I was asked to join for my sophomore year to be a treasurer…After I joined, I realized that I could make an impact on campus and take the issues that students have/had and help fix them.”

SGA also helps develop leadership skills as it gives the students involved real-world experience as if they were a part of a government body. Madelene McVey also had this to say about how her involvement in SGA enhanced her skills, claiming, “It has taught me how to get closer with people on campus and how it’s important to try something out of your comfort zone to gain a learning opportunity.”

Zachary Daley also commented on his responsibilities that are expected of him as President, “My responsibilities are fairly complex. I help determine which clubs receive funding and ensure that money is used appropriately. I serve as an advocate for the student body, reporting monthly to the university president and each semester to the board of trustees about what students are liking and disliking on campus.”

Zac also mentioned his original inspiration for why he ran for president in the first place, “I got involved in SGA because I genuinely want what’s best for my peers and for our campus. I love being able to provide feedback to the school and then see positive change happen almost immediately. But most of all I enjoy advocating for my fellow classmates so we can all have the best college experience.”

How to get involved

On Monday, Feb 16th, KWU sent out an email giving details about campus events. At the bottom of the email, it writes that there is still time to run for SGA senate and is an opportunity to “represent your peers, share your voice, and help shape student life at KWU.” Attached to the email was an SGA “Intent to Run form” in which students fill out if they want to be considered. The form requires students to give their name, Student ID, GPA, and the position they are seeking.

Students are also required to read the entirety of the SGA constitution and sign their name, confirming they are fully aware of the responsibilities expected of them. The elections remain open for 2 weeks as they began February 11th and will close this Tuesday, the 24th, giving students plenty of time to create their campaigns and vote. With some new faces joining the senate, we can only hope that their leadership is just as good as the last, ensuring KWU remains a creative and active campus for years to come!
