The KWU Major & Minor Fair

A Room of Opportunity

Each year, the university’s Major and Minor Fair transforms the gym into a hub of activity. More than just a collection of booths, the fair serves a critical purpose. In fact, it acts as a map for a student’s academic future. In one place, students can explore the many different paths available to them. For many, this event is the first step in turning a question about their studies into a clear plan.

A Place for Discovery

The fair’s greatest value is in its power to introduce students to subjects they might not have considered. For instance, a student who has only taken science classes can walk past the music department’s booth and discover a minor in music performance. Similarly, someone focused on business might find a new passion for a history class. This kind of discovery is hard to find on a computer screen. On the other hand, the fair makes learning and new ideas feel real and close. It’s an opportunity to see all the different majors and minors in one place and imagine what your path might look like.

The Power of Conversation

Direct conversation is a key part of the fair’s success. Instead of reading a description online, a student can sit down with a professor and ask questions. They can learn what the day-to-day work in a certain field is like. Furthermore, a student can get honest advice on how to start in a new major. This is a special chance to get to know the people who teach the classes. Ultimately, it can help a student feel more comfortable and confident about their choice.

The fair is also an important place for students to connect with each other. Students who already have a major can share their experiences. They can give helpful advice about which classes to take or what clubs to join. This student-to-student interaction is a valuable part of the event. After all, it helps newcomers feel less alone in their decisions. Showing them that others have walked this path before. At first glance, choosing a major or minor can seem intimidating. Here is what faculty member and event coordinator Jennifer Moran said about making connections:

“Building a network like you do here at Kansas Wesleyan is what helps us get through the hard times. The more people you get to know, the more you’ll be able to become informed on what you want to do.”

Faculty’s Role and Perspective

From the other side of the table, teachers and advisors see the fair as a chance to meet future students. They love talking about what they teach. Therefore, they hope to share their passion and help students find their own. This personal touch is a big part of why the fair works so well. Moran explained her goal for the day:

“The goal is to spread awareness about what each department can do. Even if it’s as a minor. A lot of people don’t think about minors. Also, hopefully this will allow the freshman to get to know some faculty, see what there is to see, and explore.”

A Steppingstone to the Future

In the end, the Major and Minor Fair is a valuable tool for everyone at the university. It helps students explore, connect, and plan their future in a meaningful way. The fair is a reminder that a college education is not just about getting a degree. It’s about finding out who you are and what you want to do. It’s an important first step on the path to a good future.
