Kansas Wesleyan Volleyball Sweeps Ottawa, Returns to .500
Kansas Wesleyan Women’s Volleyball earned a convincing straight-set victory over Ottawa University on Friday night at Mabee Arena. The Coyotes took the match with scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18.
As a result, KWU improves to 10-10 overall and 4-2 in KCAC play, while Ottawa drops to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Set 1: Coyotes Take Early Control
To begin the match, Kansas Wesleyan came out strong with an 8-0 run, immediately putting pressure on the Braves. Throughout the set, the Coyotes maintained their lead, although Ottawa managed to close the gap to 19-16. However, KWU responded quickly, extending the lead to 24-17. Despite two late points by the Braves, a final block from the Coyotes secured the first set, 25-21.
Set 2: Back-and-Forth Battle
The second set proved to be much closer. In fact, it featured 16 ties and six lead changes. Initially, Ottawa jumped ahead, but KWU quickly answered. Midway through the set, a 5-0 run
allowed the Coyotes to build a 13-9 lead.
Even so, Ottawa fought back and eventually took a brief 19-18 lead. Nevertheless, the Coyotes stayed composed. They regained momentum, reached set point at 24-22, and closed out the set with a timely kill to win 25-23.
Set 3: KWU Closes with Confidence
At the start of the third set, both teams traded points, leading to an 8-8 tie. Then, KWU once again pulled away with a 5-0 scoring run, making it 13-8. As the set continued, the Coyotes extended their advantage to 19-12.
Although Ottawa attempted a comeback, narrowing the score to 22-18, KWU didn’t let up. In the end, a key kill followed by two Ottawa errors sealed the match for the Coyotes, 25-18.
Postgame Reaction
After the match, senior hitter Rylee Serpan, who led all players with 13 kills, reflected on the team’s performance. “Today was a great team win for us,” she said. “We haven’t been playing to our full potential recently, so this was a big step in the right direction.” Her leadership on the court played a major role in the Coyotes’ success in all three sets.
