Seraphim Bread Brings Artisan Baking to the Heart of Salina

The Bakery
Seraphim Bread is a locally owned artisan bakery and sandwich shop that is located in the heart of downtown Salina at 145 S. Santa Fe Ave. The bakery was established by Salina native Tyler Gallagher in 2017, and was originally located on n 228C S. Santa Fe, in Spilman Plaza. When the bakery first opened, Gallagher’s mission was to “celebrate Midwestern culinary heritage through handmade, old-world style breads and seasonal fare.”
Back in early March, Seraphim Bread moved locations to support its expanding operations and to better serve its growing customer base. This expansion has allowed Seraphim to grow in many ways. The new location on Santa Fe has a bigger kitchen, more dining space, new equipment, and a larger team that is necessary to meet the growing demand.
The Meaning Behind “Seraphim”
The word “Seraphim” comes from the book of Isaiah in the Bible. The word refers to a type of celestial being that is described as having six wings and is continually praising God, symbolizing purity, light, and fiery passion. The owner describes the name as “beautiful” and talks about it as part of Christian lore. “Seraphim” is the highest choir of angels, and it’s like manna from heaven.
The Goal and Philosophy
The goal of Seraphim Bread is engrained in reviving Midwestern food culture through handcrafted, locally sourced, and seasonally inspired baking. On their website it says that their mission is “not only to provide Salina and the surrounding area with high quality handmade bread, but to promote the food culture of central Kansas and the Midwest.
The “Old World” style of our bakery is here to get our patrons closer to their food source; to show off that the food they eat is made by passionate and professional individuals that care about craftsmanship. In a new age of the public becoming aware how and where their food comes from it is vitally important to take the first step forward in this movement; to rebuild the prestige of Midwestern food. Seraphim Bread embraces an old-world style, focusing to reconnect patrons with food origins and Midwestern craftsmanship.
Hours
Seraphim Bread runs on a unique day-by-day and time schedule, as they are only open four days out of the week; which are Wednesday-Saturday from 7am-3pm.
Local Roots, Seasonal Menus
The bakery emphasized on locally owned and sourced ingredients. A few of the businesses that Seraphim gets it produce and ingredients from: Hildebrand Dairy, Smoky River Meats, Heartland Mills flour, Shroom-mates Mushrooms, Blacksmith Coffee, and produce from C&C High Tunnels and Svaty’s Produce. Another small Salina business that focuses on supporting locally sourced food is Prairieland Market. Here is an article that overviews Prairieland and similar mission.
By having a rotating menu that changes each season, Seraphim Bread is able to capture the patterns of Midwestern agriculture while still being able to offer customers fresh and exciting flavors.
