Pilates Studio Revitalizes Salina’s Wellness Scene
What is Era Pilates and Fitness?
Era Pilates and Fitness is a new fitness studio that recently opened in downtown Salina. At 109 S Santa Fe Ave, which previously was home to The Bath Pub. It was founded by Kristal Venters, a lifelong dancer and certified Pilates instructor. Venters is passionate to create a space that has a strong focus on community, intention, and personalized instruction.
Era Pilates and Fitness focuses on Pilates (reformer, mat), as well as dance, barre, yoga, small group, and private classes. Era strives to serve people at all levels, whether someone is new to movement, returning, or wants to build strength both physically and mentally.
Their philosophy is to “offer personalized attention, in a calm, beautiful space where you can move, breathe, and grow stronger, physically and mentally. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or complete beginner, Era is your space to evolve. We are more than a Pilates studio. We are a movement community.”
What is Pilates?
Pilates are a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility, and body awareness, especially targeting the core muscles (abdomen, lower back, hips, and pelvis). Pilates have recently become popular worldwide for improving posture, balance, and overall fitness. The key features of Pilates are the following: Control- every movement is done with precision and intention. Concentration- mental focus is essential to connect both the body and mind. Centering- the core is seen as the body’s powerhouse. Flow- movements are smooth and graceful. Precision- attention to alignment and form. Breath- controlled breathing is coordinated with movement.
There are several types of Pilates, each with a slightly different approach, focus, or equipment used. The following are the main types of Pilates:
- Mat Pilates: a form of Pilates done entirely on the floor using a thick exercise mat for cushioning and support. It focuses on core strength, stability, flexibility, posture, and controlled breathing—all using your body weight as resistance (with optional small props).
- Reformer Pilates: type of Pilates that uses a special machine called a Reformer to provide resistance and support for exercises that improve core strength, flexibility, balance, and overall body alignment.
- Contemporary Pilates: modern evolution of traditional Pilates that blends Joseph Pilates’ original method with current knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, physical therapy, and movement science. It’s more flexible, creative, and personalized than classical Pilates.
- Traditional Pilates: the original method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It follows a strict, structured sequence of exercises that are performed with a specific flow, rhythm, and precision.
- Power Pilates: a fitness-focused style of Pilates that combines classical Pilates principles with a modern, more intense workout approach. It emphasizes core strength, full-body toning, and dynamic movement, often in a group class setting. It’s not necessarily about brute strength, but about control, precision, and flow, just like traditional Pilates, but with more energy and pace.
