How to Avoid Burnout In College

Written by on February 23, 2026

This article is not to tell you the magical cure for when you feel burned out in college. It is simply for helping identify the signs of burnout, how to avoid them, and some tips that could help when you feel burnt out in college. Don’t get me wrong, college is hard. The TV shows we all watched growing up portrayed the “college experience” as fun and the best times of your life. That could be true, but the difficult side of college is not often shown.

Being overly stressed and feeling like there is not enough time in the day to do all of your activities and tasks is a completely normal thing for a college student. However, here is the thing: when you are experiencing burnout, it is never too late to get out of it. Below are common signs of burnout, along with some tips to help you overcome it.

Common Signs of Burnout

  • Exhaustion
  • Lack of motivation to do things
  • Inconsistent appetite
  • Mood swings
  • Difficulty sleeping

Tips For Getting Out of The Burnout

  • Reduce Your Screen Time: Being on your phone a lot can hinder your sleep and ability to complete tasks promptly. By reducing your screen time, you can help plan and complete tasks more effectively and get more sleep.

  • Create Good Study Habits: Establishing good study habits can help with feeling more prepared for future tests and create less stress.

  • Plan Out Your Homework: Whether it is in a planner, sticky notes, or the Notes app, planning out your homework days in advance can help relieve stress and be more organized.

  • Take Time For Yourself: Learn how to be selfish and take time for yourself. It is okay to take a step back and do stuff for yourself. Go out and get something to eat, hang out with friends, sleep, or simply take a break.

  • Get Enough Sleep: College students need about 7-9 hours of sleep per day to function properly, have optimal physical health, and mental well-being.
