KWU Homecoming Hype Hits New Heights-

Music, cheers, with purple-and-gold pride filled the air Friday evening as Kansas Wesleyan University students, alumni, and community members packed the Campus for a Knock your socks off performance by our cheer and dance. Hosted by the KWU Student Activities Board, the rally marked the official kickoff to Homecoming Weekend, drawing hundreds of Coyotes together for a night of performances, games, and a look back at the university’s deep roots. Where students had special events jam-packed all weekend, ranging from tailgate kickoff to movie nights with fellow coyotes.

The eventful day served as an everlasting reminder of the spirit of our university that dates back all the way to 1886, when the doors first opened to continue the mission of faith, service, and education. “This Homecoming was so much better than last year’s. Not only did we have a better spot to perform our cheers to the public, but it also just had more hype,” Said cheerleader Destiny Howe, who was a part of the cheer team.

Following the cheers came a performance from the university’s pep band that had the crowd clapping and chanting “Go Coyotes!” in unison. As this pep rally continued, coaches and teams were recognized for their success in previous years and current years as the community came together to support. For many alumni in attendance, the rally was a nostalgic return to their college days as multiple alumni were inducted into the hall of fame or were presented awards for their success after being a Coyote.

That spirit runs deep through Kansas Wesleyan’s history as a day that used to be for dancing, social recognition, and football. Homecoming has evolved from a simple football celebration into a weekend-long festival featuring concerts, reunions, and community service projects. That truly brings the life and spirit back into the university when it can get lost in overwhelming assignments, tests, and every other obstacle college can bring one’s way.

During the rally, students learned both the university’s historical foundation and its modern momentum, which is unique to KWU. President Matt Thompson took the stage to remind attendees that KWU’s growth — including recent campus renovations and enrollment milestones — reflects the same values that have guided the university for nearly 140 years.

The rally concluded with the spirited performance of the KWU fight song. As students poured out, leaving the rally, there was a clear sense of community that lingered around the performance, which left everyone in an enjoyable mood.
