On the Pot: KWU Pottery Night
Written by Merissa Bailey Rios on May 6, 2026
On The Pot was a hit with KWU students last week. A local ‘pottery playhouse’. Welcoming Kansas Wesleyan University for a night of pottery painting.
Students were invited to visit On the Pot in downtown Salina. With plates, mugs, bowls, and more available to choose from. Once the painting is completed, students will leave them to be fired. Picking them up in the following week!
On the Pot Process

Once you enter, you are welcomed by cheerful staff. For the KWU pottery nights, students had a $15 limit. Allowing students to choose free pottery items or pay the difference on other options.
Madelene McVey, a junior majoring in Business Marketing, enjoyed this experience. She took her time checking out her options. Eventually, picking out an adorable penguin penny bank.

Next is picking your paint palette. For freshman Criminal Justice student, Logan Schwab this was an easy process. His pottery pick was a chameleon. Schwab quickly picked the speckled green paint, giving his work a unique texture.
Once you have completed this, it is time to head to your workstation. The tables are set up with many brush options and a clean cup of water. There are extra tools available to make your vision come true.
Lucia Palzer is a freshman nursing student. She picked up a cup that she hopes to use for her vanity. Using some tape to create the lines going around the cup.

Merissa Bailey Rios, junior communications student, picked out a spoon dish. Utilizing some of the circle sponges for her fun frog theme.
As you complete your work, an employee collected the pottery. These were collected along with the students’ contact information. This quick process lets students stay informed about when their work can be picked up in the following week.
Creativity

There was some amazing work at the KWU pottery night. For some, Pinterest was a huge help in coming up with some inspiration.
Madelene McVey made her penguin penny bank uniquely hers. Adding some cute pink touches to match her vibes.
Logan Schwab was excited to see his chameleon come to life. Using some fun colors/textures.
Lucia Palzer created an aesthetic cup for her makeup brushes. This will easily blend with her trendy lifestyle.
Merissa Bailey Rios wanted to make something that would blend in with her home. Creating a cute and useful pottery masterpiece.
