Students have a blast at Casino Night!

Last Friday night, Kansas Wesleyan University welcomed students into the Student Activity Center (SAC) to enjoy their very own casino night. This gave students a chance to come together and have fun participating in simulated gambling, without losing any money.

When you first walk in, immediately there are tables to greet you with trays of casino chips ranging in values of 5 all the way up to 5,000. You are given $600 in chips to start your night out in the form of fifteen $5s, ten $10s, five $25s, and three $100s. You are able to trade in ten $100s for a $1000 chip, or you can trade in five of those for the rare $5000 chip.

Throughout both floors of the SAC they had tables that included Russian Roulette, Craps, Texas Hold ’em, Blackjack, and more. Craps appeared to be the most popular table due to the active participation of students. This could be the result of the fact that players get to roll their own dice, giving them a sense of control over their outcome.

Big Risk=Bigger Payout

Russian roulette also was a very popular game as players have the opportunity to choose the range of risk in which they want to bet on. They could choose to place a bet on if the ball will land on a red or black, a 50/50 bet with a decent payout. Or if players are feeling lucky, they can decide to bet on an exact number they think the ball will land on, a higher risk with a higher reward. Russian roulette is a game that involves no real skill or technique, making it easier for students who have never participated to get involved. The tables involving cards were also very popular as they allowed about five to six players at a table.

The SAC was also decorated to fit the vibe of the night, with a speaker in the middle of the room blasting Kanye and Jay-Z music to make you feel like you were actually in the middle of a Vegas Casino. When the night is up students are then able to spend however many chips they earned on raffle tickets. Each ticket cost about $200 in chips which was daunting for some but cheap for others. You would then write your name on each individual ticket you bought and put them in a jar designated for specific prizes. These prizes included Legos, a digital camera, Airpods, a Keurig, a TV, and more. Sophomore, Diego Davis of the football team claims, “I was only able to earn enough for about two tickets, I’m hoping to win the camera or the TV!” Davis went on to win neither as he only had two tickets compared to some that had over a hundred.

The night was not only a chance for students to feel the addictive rush of a casino, but it was also a great way to spend a free Friday night and mingle with other people. Sophomore, James Carroll also of the football team says, “I’m having a great time, but I can’t stop losing money.” Carroll must’ve been playing the wrong games, as mentioned above, some students were able to afford more than 100 tickets with the chips they had earned over the night. This was no first-time event for KWU, as the school usually hosts a casino night roughly a couple times a semester. Each time they will always have new exciting prizes, motivating students to come back and earn more than they did last time. They usually inform students about Casino Night in the campus events email sent out every week.

Future Events

This was no different than the one sent out this week with the headline, “Roll the dice and test your luck with Blackjack, Roulette, and more! Free chips, fun games, and prizes!” As the nice weather on campus picks up and we get closer to the Spring season, there was no doubt Kansas Wesleyan University will have more exciting events to keep students engaged for these remaining months!
