Your College Major Is Probably Not Going to Get You a Job

Written by on May 14, 2026

How many college graduates actually work in their field?

Less than 55% of college graduates work in fields related to their major. Over 45% work in something completely different. They spent four years and thousands of dollars on education that did not lead to relevant work.

This is not because students chose wrong majors. It is because the job market has changed faster than colleges have.

Why has this happened?

The world changes faster than universities can change. Degrees take four years. By the time you graduate, the field has changed. The skills you learned may be obsolete. The jobs you trained for might not exist.

Also, colleges have not adapted to the job market. They still teach based on what was relevant five years ago.

Is college still worth the cost?

It depends. A degree is valuable for some fields law, medicine, engineering. For many other fields, it is not. A business degree might not be worth $100,000 in debt if the job you get does not require it.

The question is not whether college is good. The question is whether college is worth the cost for your specific goals.

What should colleges do?

Teach skills, not just content. Teach adaptability. Teach how to learn, not just what to learn. The future is uncertain. Education should prepare you for uncertainty, not certainty.

Also, colleges should be honest about job prospects. If 45% of graduates work outside their field, colleges should acknowledge this and help students explore diverse paths.

What about alternative education?

Bootcamps, apprenticeships, and certifications work for some paths.

They are cheaper. They are faster. They focus on skills employers want. For some careers, they are better than a degree.

The myth is that everyone needs a four-year degree. That is not true. Different paths work for different people.
