On Friday, February 27, KWU hosted its very own “Open Mic Night”. Where students were welcome to show up to the Fitzpatrick Auditorium and express themselves on a microphone however they pleased.
The school announced the event in an email for the weekly events on Thursday stating, “Whether you sing, rap, read poetry, perform comedy, or just want to support your friends, this is your night to shine!” The event lasted from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and was hosted by the Multicultural Student Union (MCSU).

Before going into the details of open mic night, let’s learn a little bit about MCSU and some of the events they’ve hosted on campus in the past. The Multicultural Student Union is a club on campus that promotes diversity on campus and hosts all kinds of events. The goal of the club is to make everyone on campus feel like they belong at Kansas Wesleyan no matter where they’re from.
The Club sponsor is Dr. Allen Smith and they have hosted things like a silent disco night, talent shows, and even a kickball tournament last year. The purpose of these events are meant to bring students on campus closer together and further strengthen the community within Kansas Wesleyan University. More information about the MCSU club can be found here.
Performances

Wesley Gaines
Open Mic Night last Friday was no different as multiple students participated in showing off their on-stage skills. The open mic night has a very unique rule: there aren’t any. When you walk into the Fitzpatrick Auditorium you’ll see a microphone, a speaker, and a small audience.
From there it is up to everyone in the room to determine what the performance will be. Obviously some people are more shy than others but the night became very memorable. Some people performed country, others performed rock, and some even went up and told a few jokes.

Wesley Gaines of the football team was one of the first on stage and he gave a very well-done performance of “Rock with you” by Michael Jackson. Some of the girls at MCSU were nice enough to provide Wesley with some backup dancing, even though he didn’t need them.
Freshman Robert Muhammad performed Josh Turner’s “Your Man” in an incredible southern accent. And lastly, Aiden Abraham, also of the Football team gave his best Jonah Hill impression from a slam poetry scene in the comedy movie “22 Jump Street”.
As the performances continued, many members of the MCSU club were in the audience in support. This event was meant to act as a sort of test of confidence for the people there and challenged some to step out of their comfort zone. Freshman Hailey Adami shared with us why she decided to join the Multicultural Student Union, “I decided to join MCSU because we get to plan these awesome events and I love that we get to bring people together through them!”
